Feisty supermodel Naomi Campbell was wanted for questioning by the police last night after she was accused of slapping and punching her chauffeur.
The male victim said the 39-year-old model attacked him while he was driving her around New York.
Audi A8 takes aim at limousine leaders
THE new Audi A8 is superior from a technological and production perspective, but it will take some time to catch up with the incumbent leaders in the full-size luxury saloon segment, says Audi Singapore managing director Reinhold Carl.
“In China and Europe the new A8 has the potential to be No 1 in its segment,” said Mr Carl.
“But in Singapore, we have to be more realistic about convincing those who are traditional customers of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or are attracted by the BMW 7 Series.”
He was speaking at the global launch of the new flagship Audi sedan in Malaga, Spain last week.
The third-generation A8 is longer and wider than the car it replaces, and its V6 and V8 engines are up to 22 per cent more fuel-efficient.
The new A8 also debuts with several ‘firsts’, including all-LED headlights as well as a touchpad for its Multi Media Interface operating system that allows letters to be traced out using a finger – such as when entering the navigation destination, for example.
“With the new A8, we will be in the club,” said Mr Carl, referring to the high-end limousine segment. “We are not in the club at the moment because the existing A8 volume is just too small.”
Audi is the fastest-growing premium brand in Singapore. Last year, authorised distributor Premium Automobiles delivered 1,471 cars – up 11.5 per cent from 1,319 in 2008.
The increase was even more striking given that Singapore’s new car market contracted 29.3 per cent to 68,862 units last year, with sales of Audi’s rivals also shrinking slightly.
But the top-of-the-line A8 has not been one of Audi’s major players. Last year, only 40 units of the A8 or 3.6 per cent of total volume (see table) were registered here.
In 2008, a special promotion had lifted A8 numbers to 64, or 4.9 per cent of overall sales of 1,319 units.
Among authorised distributors in Singapore, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class leads the premium big saloon market, followed by the BMW 7 Series and the Lexus LS range.
With sales of 580 units in 2009, the flagship Merc accounted for 52.8 per cent of the total 1,099 full-size luxury limousine segment here, which also includes Jaguar.
“The number of existing customers in this segment is small,” said Mr Carl. “We don’t have a database like Mercedes-Benz or BMW, so we have to conquer. It is always easier to keep customers loyal than to win new customers, so it will take time.”
When the A8 is launched in the fourth quarter of 2010, Mr Carl expects ‘100 to 150 cars (sold) in the first year, with higher potential after that’.
“I strongly believe that in the life-cycle of the car, it can be No 1. It will not be overnight – it will take time to convince people,” he added.
This is because the big Audi has “the best craftsmanship and the best production”, he said, referring to the A8’s new interior with its unique use of materials and the car’s lightweight aluminium space frame structure.
“The product is not a problem,” said Mr Carl. “It is the customer’s acceptance of the brand. The question is: is the customer prepared to change?”
To achieve that, Mr Carl believes in getting the customer to sit in the car and take it out for a test drive.
The affable German knows what he is talking about – he has been successful in building up the brand with the four interlocking rings.
Since arriving here in October 2007, Audi has been growing by double digits and its $6 million annual marketing budget is the biggest for the car industry in Singapore.
Mr Carl said: “For 2010, we will continue to invest that amount and we expect major growth in sales volume.”
